The School Camp at Reykir
At the UMFÍ School Camp, young people get to know their strengths and weaknesses and learn to work with them to improve their social skills. Life at the camp is largely about communication and spending time together. The stay is an ideal opportunity to disconnect from everyday life and enjoy being with others. Because of these goals, phones, computers and devices that can play videos are not allowed. It is important that parents go over this carefully with their children before departure.

Vegetarian food is available at the camp for those who are vegetarian. The main products for people with gluten and lactose intolerance are also available. For example, there is soy milk, rice milk and soy cheese for those who cannot tolerate dairy products. Lactose-free milk is often available as well. Please note that no special vegan menu is offered.
Consideration is given to those with, for example, egg allergies and fish intolerance. We try to provide food for those with intolerances that is similar to what is served to other students.
The group leader must notify the kitchen one week in advance about students with food intolerances/allergies, to make sure the right products are available.
At the meeting with teachers on Monday, we go over which students are affected so that no one is forgotten. It is therefore important that the students’ group leader knows if students have food intolerances or allergies, or are vegetarian.
Those with more complex food-related needs are asked to contact the camp director at least eight days in advance. Products for the kitchen are ordered a week ahead, and it is difficult to accommodate special needs after that.

Students may not bring any medication to Reykir on their own responsibility. Parents are asked to hand all medication, including painkillers, to the group leaders. Group leaders keep medication in a locked cabinet.
Students are allowed to keep asthma inhalers on them or in their bag. If a student needs to bring asthma medication, the head group leader and the class teacher must be informed, and they pass the information on to staff at a designated meeting. Students may keep creams in their rooms if needed.

A student may be sent home from Reykir if necessary. There can be various reasons for this.
A student will be sent home without exception if they bring and/or use their own or others’ alcohol, tobacco, snus, e-cigarettes, drugs and/or related items. The same applies if a student is caught stealing or causing intentional damage. Parents/guardians are not refunded if a student is sent home. A student who is sent home must be picked up the same day.

Parents can arrange phone times with the group leader if they feel it is necessary.
Camp staff do not recommend that parents contact their child during the stay unless it is necessary. No news is good news.

Students spend a lot of time outdoors at the camp. It is important to prepare your child well and make sure they have good clothing suited to the weather. Good shoes that can handle water, snow, sand and getting dirty are essential.

Unfortunately, things are often left behind at the camp. To make it easier to return belongings to the right people, it is important that clothes and other items are labelled with a name and phone number. For lost property, it is best to send an email to siggi@umfi.is.
