The background to the UMFÍ 50+ National Games
At the 46th UMFÍ Federation Congress, held in Reykjanesbær in 2009, it was decided to instruct the UMFÍ Board to appoint a committee to develop the future work of older youth association members. The ideas were to be presented before the Federation Council Meeting in 2010.
The committee was appointed soon after the congress and immediately began shaping UMFÍ’s work for older members. The committee consisted of people with experience of physical activity among older people: Anna R. Möller, Flemming Jessen, Þórey S. Guðmundsdóttir, Hjörtur Þórarinsson and Sigurður Guðmundsson, who was the committee’s staff member.
At the 2010 Federation Council Meeting in Egilsstaðir, the committee’s ideas were presented. They were well received, and the committee was encouraged to continue developing them.
At a board meeting in February 2011, the UMFÍ Board then decided to hold the UMFÍ 50+ National Games.
The aim of the Games is to create a forum for people aged 50 and over to come together, enjoy good company and compete in a wide range of sports.
The first UMFÍ 50+ National Games took place on 24–26 June 2011 in Hvammstangi.
